The first inspiration for Victoriana was Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The original edition of this timeless children story was illustrated by John Tenniel and set up in Scotch Roman typeface.
The Scotch Roman typeface family was very popular during the Victorian Era, which made it a logical choice for the very first edition of Alice in Wonderland (1865).
My brief was to revive the typeface originally designed by Richard Austin and add a bit of modernity to it, in order to use it in a deluxe edition of Alice in Wonderland, and possibly for a most of the British classic books.
Victoriana was named after the « Victoriana » trend, which consists of rediscovering Victorian art and craft in many different fields.
The printed specimen designed for this typeface.
