FAQ

TypeParis will it be taught in English?

The programme will be taught in English, but the instructors will be happy to speak others languages that they know to attendees in certain occasions.

When will the next typeparis spring course take place?

After 10 years in Paris, we reinvent our type design programme. We go from 6 weeks to 3 weeks, while maintaining the fundamentals that make TypeParis’ reputation. The course will take place in Menorca, Spain for the first time. The typeparis spring programme will take place in April. The application deadline is before the 14 January. When I can apply to typeparis spring27 course?

The #typeparis27 spring programme will be in April 2027. To don’t miss the 14 January 2027 deadline, subscribe to our mailing list! Usually, we inform the selected attendees less than a week after. For 2027, the tuition-fees will cover our type design spring programme in Foundation or Expert level which includes 224 hours of instruction, featuring five core instructors, two guest critics, and Glyphs app team, to allow you to be sure of being accompanied throughout the learning process. A free access to TypeParis Now conference in May 2027, a complimentary licenses of type design applications, the TypeParis tote bag featuring type goodies, the official TypeParis Spring27 T-shirt, a set of graphic, calligraphy and type design equipment, including a bunch of Canson tracing paper and related events.

What happened to the typeparis summer course in Paris?

We believe that it is necessary to make type design courses more affordable for all. We also believe in human interaction on a daily basis between instructors and participants. This is why we stopped the TypeParis Summer type design course and replaced it with the TypeParis Spring course which offers two Foundation and Expert levels.

Do you propose scholarships?

In the past, some of our attendees have obtained a scholarship, thanks to our partnership with TypeCon. It’s open to female graphic designer, typographer, web designer, educator, or recent design graduate between the ages of 18 and 32, currently residing outside of the United States, Canada, or the EU (+Switzerland, UK), who would like to develop their typographic skills in one of the most beautiful cities on Earth.

Qualiopi financing (for French citizens)

By the very nature of our type design course in English, in Spain for 2027, and its team of instructors who change regularly, TypeParis is not eligible for Qualiopi criteria. On the other hand, On the other hand, we regularly have French attendees, some of whom even organise support by their company.

What are the requested elements to apply to the 3-week typeface design programme?

Please follow the instructions as listed on the Spring section. You will have to prepare a A4 (we prefer landscape!) sized PDF named that is no larger than 12 MB. If you’re not sure about your portfolio, please send it by advance, we will be happy to share some advice.

The PDF needs to include the following two sections for Foundation and Expert levels:

➽ Portfolio Foundation level No more than twelve graphic/typographic design projects (the limit is 12 pages). These should demonstrate your proficiency in graphic design, typography, lettering and some knowledge of Béziers curves! If a project involves other people please state your role.

➽ Curriculum-résumé Foundation level as additional page about your background (at the end of your portfolio), including any specific courses or workshops you’ve undertaken; which software applications you are proficient with (at least Adobe Illustrator); and any traditional techniques or skills such as calligraphy and lettering if you have some knowledge of them. Finally, the online form ask you to write 250 words (maximum) describing your interest for the Foundation level course in typeface design and lettering.

➽ Portfolio Expert level No more than twelve type/typographic/graphic design projects (the limit is 12 pages). These should demonstrate your proficiency in type design, typography, and lettering! If a project involves other people, please state your role. In addition (up to six additional pages), describe your typeface project being expanded during the programme. Typically, a typeface is started by yourself alone, or following a previous type course, a workshop in type design, even the TypeParis Summer course.

➽ Curriculum-résumé Expert level as additional page about your background (at the end of your portfolio), including any specific courses or workshops you’ve undertaken; which type software applications you are proficient with; and any traditional techniques or skills such as calligraphy and lettering. Finally, the online form ask you to write 250 words (maximum) describing why you apply to the Expert level, explaining your motivation for the typeface you want to develop during the course. This will help the jury to learn more about you and your motivation.

Can I register in the TypeParis programme without any undergraduate degree?

No prior degree is necessary. However, previous studies or knowledge in graphic design or typeface design will be considered during the selection process for Foundation level.

Do I already need to have acquired specific skills with some computer softwares?

Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite is recommended, particularly vector drawing (as with Illustrator’s pen tool). Knowledge of Glyphs (or Robofont or FontLab) is a plus for Foundation level. Knowledge of Glyphs is essential for the Expert level.

If I already have experience designing typefaces, am I overqualified for the programme?

Not at all, it’s why we can propose an Expert level. We encourage applicants with previous experience or the ones who followed workshops, type design classes. We propose to type designer a programme designed to enrich their know-how, strengthen their rigour, and develop their professionalism in developing and producing even more complex typeface families than the ones produced during the previous TypeParis Summer courses.

How long is the programme and how much time will be spent in class?

The TypeParis Spring programme will last during 3 intensive weeks. Classes meet from 9:00 to 20:00/20:30 in two separate 4 hours sessions, with open studio time in between. You have two days off during the week: Saturday and Sunday. Instructors will deliver 224 hours of instruction during the 3 weeks.

How many people will be admitted into this programme?

TypeParis will accept around ~16 attendees. Because small team means a closer individual proximity with instructors/international guests, and also a precious help in developing attendees’ skill levels. The instructors converse daily to keep everyone in the loop and re-adjust each person based on our observations. For most of the sessions, two instructors will be present on the class.

Should I expect to spend time to working, once out of the classroom?

All this may vary depending your skills and experience. Overall though this investment we can estimate around 10 to 20 extra hours every week.

How will TypeParis attendees be evaluated?

We expect from each attendee to working with envy, to be involved and to demonstrate its understanding of the concepts taught in this programme. The work of each attendee will be evaluated regularly by our invited type critics. In addition to continuous attendance during the 3 weeks, the attendee’s typeface completion will be evaluated at the end of the programme during which a final presentation + jury will determine the obtention of the “TypeParis” Certificate. “With distinction” recognises students with a particularly high quality of work.

Which materials and software do I need to supply to attend courses?

Just bring your laptop, usually a recent Apple Macbook running a no older than two years old Mac OS is fine to run font design applications and typical graphic design applications. If you usually work with a Windows machine, bring a Apple Macbook for the Spring course.

We will provide Glyphs (MacOs only app, included in the tuition fee), a type design app license for 3 weeks, along specific a set of graphic, calligraphy and type design equipment, including a bunch of Canson tracing paper. You will indeed have access to fast Internet as well a laser printer with the necessary paper for your everyday needs.

You also will received the official TypeParis T-shirt of the year, a TypeParis tote bag of type goodies and so on.

In which area of Menorca, TypeParis Spring27 is located?

For 3 weeks, you will be in total immersion at the Convent of Sant Diego in Alaior, Menorca. It was built in 1629, since transformed into a cultural center with all the contemporary facilities such as wifi, projection, air conditioning, etc. The classroom adapted to the Foundation and Expert levels, as well a room dedicated to presentation. click here for map.

Accommodation

Accommodation cost isn’t included on the price. We have planned to offer shared accommodation with the most economical supplement possible after registering.

By yourself, you can also find a place to stay in Menorca, around Alaior, specially if you came with family-friends as it is a great island for holidays. There is various websites such this one who propose renting off season. We strongly recommend sharing a house for rent with others attendees, because it is more economical and more useful during off-work sessions.

What about if I’m not European or a resident attendee?

This programme treats all applicants equally regardless of residency. TypeParis will not qualify attendees for International attendees visas and is not really able to assist you in getting a travel visa of any kind. We therefore ask you to read with the highest attention the government guidelines for visas to Spain and France.

Do you offer internship positions?

To be in full immersion of the annual summer programme! We’re looking for help for TypeParis Now conference. ➽ Capacities: Serious, well organized, absolutely passionate about typography and type design.

➽ Submit your application to our email using #typeparis27 internship in the subject line. In past we enjoyed the company of current students from various (design and type) parisian schools. English basic is a requirement if you’re French (si vous arrivez à lire jusque là, c’est bon signe). If you’re from abroad, it will be better if you speak a bit of French but not a requirement.

Proficiency on Adobe Creative Could applications as well Apple tools, Mailchimp to produce #typeparis27 Now conference and Spring course graphic design material, community management, and others social events related. Very basic knowledge of video editing will help. We’re looking for someone not shy as this young talent will be in contact of speakers. In addition, you will participate of the life of Typofonderie.

Internship located at Typofonderie from January to March 2027 and/or from April to July 2027. It’s a paid internship + typographic related bonus.
