Review of Now25 Conference

Jamie Clarke in Forum, Journal of letter Exchange, September 2025. Some excerpts in summary:

Type Paris Now25 was a packed day of talks at the heart of a wider programme of summer type workshops and an exhibition. The talks, all in English, brought together designers who design type and those who use it expressively.

The venue, beneath a modern hotel, included a main theatre and a breakout room for conversation. The 180-strong crowd, mostly young designers, added to the event’s vibrant energy. Most presentations were from individuals discussing their own practice, offering insights into their work and thought processes.

This was the most valuable part of the conference. I’m interested in how people’s work connects with their daily lives and the challenges of being creative on demand. Overall, it’s a thoughtfully curated, enjoyable event I’d happily return to.

Review of Now24 Conference

Elliot attended the conference, enjoying talks on typeface design, branding, and typography history. Extracts of his review of Now24 talks from his regular Newsletter as well as the special one (not available online).

Carolina Laudon’s Talk: Carolina Laudon, responsible for Oatly’s bespoke typeface, discussed her approach to self-directed design and development. Landor’s Branding Work: Shaun Loftman of Landor showcased the agency’s history and recent branding projects, including the Imperia rebrand and Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano’s branding.

So much amazing work from Marta Cerdà Alimbau in her talk, Type to image. I wasn’t aware of her or her book of the same name. I was especially interested in her work for Josep Maria Martí Duran, who plays an instrument called the theorbo, and her animated posters for the band Mishima. From Eponym to acronym, was given by Leslie David, in which she described her journey from freelancer to agency owner. So interesting to see how, despite being known for her designs for the fashion and beauty industries, this happened almost by accident.

Jeremy Tankard delivered a fantastic talk in which he delved into how small details can radically shift the personality of a typeface — even when those shifts might seem ‘wrong’ when viewed in isolation. Paul Shaw: His talk was like a whirlwind tour through type history. I didn’t know that Paul’s book, The Eternal Letter, had originally started life as an issue of John’s Codex magazine.

VikaVita, the collective name used by twin sisters Victoria and Vitalina Lopukhina, presented Ukrainian Cyrillic. What can you love it for? — a detailed look at not just the nuances that distinguish Ukrainian from other Cyrillic languages, but also Ukrainian calligraphy specifically. Finally, the conference closed with A panel discussion on typography and type design education, including the impact of AI.

Diary of a Cool Kid: My TypeParis 2025 Adventure Type, Friendships, and Memories by Thitawan Noenpoempisut, TypeParis25 alumni. Discover her final typeface project: Tylar.

Thitawan attended TypeParis, a transformative experience that deepened their love for type design. She explain that the programme, though intense, provided her a solid foundation in type design, allowing Thitawan to create Tylar, a humanist serif typeface inspired by calligraphy. The experience also fostered a sense of community and provided valuable insights from international guest critics.

The glass ceiling break moment with TypeParis23, published on Medium by Soniya Stella, TypeParis24 alumni. Discover her final typeface project: Chapelle.

Despite setbacks, they persevered, eventually gaining recognition for their typography work and applying to TypeParis as a final attempt to nurture their passion before starting a full-time job. Soniya recounts their journey to TypeParis, highlighting the challenges they faced, including job offer uncertainties and visa concerns. She emphasises the enriching experience of TypeParis, not only for the curriculum but also for the opportunity to immerse themselves in Paris’ rich typographic heritage and learn from renowned instructors.”

Type Paris 2022: What I Learned Beyond Type Design published on plau.design blog by Ana Laura Ferraz, TypeParis22 alumni. Discover her final typeface project: Le Petit Samba.

Ana, a designer at Plau, Brazil, shares her five-week intensive course experience in Paris. She emphasises the importance of seeking internal validation, trusting processes, knowing their limitations, and filtering feedback. Ana also highlights that negative feedback is crucial for growth and that it’s essential not to take criticism personally. Learning to filter feedback, impose limits in diverse environments, and seek support are essential for personal and professional development. The support of classe mates and instructors, even in difficult times, was essential for her success.
