‍‍‍‍Q&A Martina Flor

We have a wonderful group of speakers and guests sharing with us at TypeParis. We wanted to find out a little more about each of them, so came up with a series of questions which they have generously taken the time to answer.

Born in Argentina, Martina Flor studied communication design in Barcelona, Spain, went on to complete her Masters of Type Design in The Hague, The Netherlands, and opened her own studio in Berlin, Germany. She is a gifted designer, and has a impressive command over letterforms and layout. She has published a book, Lust auf Lettering, which you can read more about here. She also launched a shop on which you can buy stationnery, pins, Letter lover series…

What is it you like about typography?

Martina Flor: I like to work with both, the text and the form, as counterparts of the same message. I find it interesting how the form can reinforce or contradict the text itself. I work with typography because it’s what I currently do the best.

At what point in history would you choose to live?

At this point; I think the world has never been more exciting!

Has your creative process changed over the years?

Definitely. It has become more time efficient overall. I can identify mistakes much easier and I know shortcuts to better results. I can work a lot faster and cleaner. I have no choice to :)

What is your favourite magazine/movie/T.V. series?

I haven’t seen a movie in one go since the arrival of my son, so I’m slightly outdated with the industry. I love House of Cards, and Mad Men. I’m strangely hooked with The Walking Dead and I’m one of those people who watched Lost until the end.

What sparked your interest in type design?

Studying more than anything. Learning an expertise and experimenting with all the tools and methods to create letter shapes just made my head blown in ideas. I think that was my biggest inspiration to pursue this career. I didn’t picture this present at all before studying type design.

Your most satisfying achievement?

Running my lettering studio in Berlin. Going to work every day and feeling that this is the best thing that I could be doing at them moment.

Name something that inspires you.

High competition sports and dance. I just it find amazing to master your body in such a way that every muscle acts exactly how you want it to, and how you achieve the forms and positions that you plan. Something similar to how letter design works, right?
