The fifth and final night of #tptalks16! So sad! It was a wonderful night, as they all have been. We’re going to miss getting together each Wednesday once we’re all back home and far away from one another again.
Our opener, Cleoburo, gave a fascinating insight into her work, and the challenges and rewards experienced when working as an individual in a fast-paced and demanding industry.
Her work is heavily typography-based, colourful and beautifully simple. I particularly enjoyed her work for Monoprix on a range of packaging, involving strong typography and humorous lines of copy cleverly included in the layout. Fantastic work!
Lucas Sharp was up next, and did an amazing job, especially given he was feeling ill at the time – you wouldn’t even have known. Everyone appreciated his candour, humour and obvious dedication and passion for type design. He is inspired by the extraordinary work of 20th century calligrapher and book designer Oscar Ogg, and we were inspired by his take on Ogg’s shapes in his revival/tribute typeface, Ogg.
Lucas also created Sharp Sans, an iteration of which (entitled Unity) is being used by Pentagram for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Lucas walked us through some of that story, and the process behind the typeface. It was fascinating to hear about the challenges faced.
After the talks, we all equipped ourselves with some beers and chatted away, soaking up the time with each other. It was a wonderful night, and we are already excited for #tptalks17!
Huge thanks as usual to the speakers for sharing with us, to LeTank for hosting us, to the Typofonderie staff for all their hard work setting up and signing everyone in, to Jean François and Véronique for tirelessly organising the event and giving us a reason to be here, to Véronique Marrier for hosting the session, to the livestreamers for their support, and of course to everyone who made it out on the night; we couldn’t do it without you.
