Schreiber

A couple of years ago, I visited an exhibition about Albrecht Dürer and was struck by how modern the types used for the inscriptions on the walls were. This modern typography clashed with the historical art, creating two very different vibes that pulled me out of the immersive experience I was hoping for. I found it unfortunate that the type didn’t match the historical context. This experience inspired me to create a typeface specifically for exhibitions about 15th-century German engraving art in museums.

Schreiber is a family typeface designed for lovers of Albrecht Dürer, who is renowned not only for his incredible engraving art but also for his profound knowledge and work in type geometry. This typeface captures the essence of two type styles that coexisted in 15th-century Germany: the angular, movement-driven calligraphy and engraving methods led by Fraktur and Schwabacher blackletters, and the elegance and intellectual transmission associated with Old Style. The challenge was to blend these two strong styles and find a harmonious balance between the intricate details of Garalde and Schwabacher.

Schreiber is a family type face including a text font with 6 weights, from Regular to Black, with an Italic and a crazy Display. Schreiber is elegant, érudite and angular. This typeface is designed to be versatile, able to handle the demands of both body text and headings in various contexts, from exhibition materials to academic publications. Its design ensures that it remains legible and visually appealing, even at smaller sizes, making it suitable for extended reading. The angular features of the blackletter elements combined with the refined touches of Old Style create a unique and compelling typeface that pays homage to Dürer’s legacy while providing a modern tool for contemporary designers.
