Armoise
While talking with Mathieu about his typeface “Marianne” for the French government, he asked me if the Belgian government has his own typeface too. That made me think, what would be a Belgian styled typeface? The answer could be vast but it reached me to probably the most famous art style of Belgium: l’Art Nouveau.
This international style of art and architecture was also for me a good link between Brussels and Paris to symbolise my participation in TypeParis as a Belgian.
By visiting Typofonderie’s library during the programme, I picked a beautiful typographic reference from Otto Eckman, a multifaceted artist known for his contributions to the Jugendstil (the German equivalent of Art Nouveau).
From my humanistic calligraphy and my letters drawn on tracing papers, I took inspiration from Eckerman’s “Eckmannschrift” typeface. I added some of the curves and characteristics of the strokes on my serifs and endings with my own style.
