Keltiek
Keltiek, which means “celtic” in Breton, is a contemporary typography inspired by the forms and lettering of Celtic art, especially those found in Irish medieval manuscripts such as the Book of Kells. These writing styles, rich and complex, crossed the seas thanks to the migrations of the British peoples in the fifth and sixth centuries, establishing themselves sustainably in Brittany. This cultural mix has deeply marked the visual and spiritual identity of the region, forging close links between Brittany, Ireland, Wales and Cornwall. Coming myself from a Breton family – my name, Guillemot, testifies to this – I have always felt a particular affinity with this heritage. A trip to Ireland strengthened this link: I discovered the graphic richness of illuminated manuscripts, where letters almost become works of art. Their rounded shapes, their meticulous ornaments, their plant and symbolic interlacing make up a captivating visual alphabet, but often difficult to read in everyday use. It is from this observation that Keltiek was born. I sought to reinterpret Celtic aesthetics through a more rational typographic grid, inspired by the proportions of Romance typographies, to improve its readability while preserving the decorative spirit of my references. The font thus offers two registers:
— a basic version, designed for more functional text uses;
— and a series of alternates (alternative typeface), more expressive and experimental, directly inspired by the most daring letters of the medieval era.
