Biography

Friedrich Althausen is a type designer, typographer, and calligrapher based in Berlin. After his studies at the Bauhaus University Weimar he worked on original typefaces for textbooks and a school atlas, as well as Vollkorn, which achieved international reach as one of the first free web fonts. As an enthusiastic ambassador for all matters related to type, he regularly gives lectures in Germany and abroad. As Creative Type Director at Monotype, he stands for deep typographic expertise and an engaged approach to communicating type. He is responsible for type designs and modifications for local and global brands. He contributes to key projects such as Helvetica Now Variable and collaborates on bespoke typefaces for clients including Reckitt, Duolingo, Evri, Balenciaga, TeamViewer, Captain Morgan, De Vegetarische Slager, and Bechtle. As a calligrapher, he works with self built writing tools and realizes large scale, temporary chalk calligraphy in public space. In his free time, Friedrich sails on the Havel, builds wooden toys for his children, and sings in a choir.
