This is the shortest phase of the programme and probably the most intensive one, combining last critics and global reviews to correct, polish and complete the required set for the final delivery. The fatigue is starting to be evident in all attendees, who have been working hard for an already one month. However, their motivation and excitement of completing their typefaces give them the needed energy to keep carrying out their amazing projects!
And, of course, it is now time to start thinking of the awaited Presentation Day, which will take place next Friday 12 July in he afternoon. Do remember it is open to everyone who is interested! You just need to register yourself here. We hope to see you all there!
Expanding the family
This short week has started with the classical typeface family extensions meeting: a global review of all projects to give a general feedback to all attendees before going back to their individual work. One of the missions of this fourth phase is to expand every typefaces into a fully fledged family.
With the assistance of the instructors Jean François Porchez, Mathieu Réguer, Malou Verlomme, Julie Soudanne and Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer, the group has focused on designing alternates and ligatures, on developing the language support of their typefaces and on creating more weight variants such as the italic version, the condensed version, the optical size version or other specific concept variants according to the fourteen personal projects.
Last international guest critic: Krista Radoeva
We have had the pleasure of hosting the Bulgarian independent type designer Krista Radoeva as the last of the four guest critics of this edition. Radoeva has been immensely helpful for the attendees. She has helped them to fix last-minute mistakes not only on their main weight typefaces but also on their family variants –weight and/or styles. She has also stimulated the attendees setting out several improvements they could apply in a future, once TypeParis Summer24 will end. Thank you very much for your visit, Krista!
Main weight completion and fine-tuning
Lately on this week of the programme, it has been the time to look over the requirement for the final delivery of all typeface families. We have focused on the fine tuning of each main typeface of the fourteen different projects. And even if we have been talking about the spacing from the very beginning of the programme and attendees have been working on the spacing for several weeks, it is during this penultimate stage when we dedicate a particular session to fix and refine the spacing of the whole families.
Glyphs: advanced digital workflow
We have taken advantage of the last week that we have Rainer Erich Scheichelbauer, the Glyphs’ co-founder, with us every day in the classroom. Rainer has given us several crucial sessions: the Composite-Component, a spacing one and another for interpolation, multiple masters and variable fonts. We want to thank him, one more year, of his dedication, enthusiasm and passion while teaching at TypeParis Summer programme.
Do not forget to reading us on the next and last phase of the programme. TypeParis Summer24 is now about to reach the end!
