We have a wonderful group of speakers and guests sharing with us this year at TypeParis. We wanted to find out a little more about each of them, so came up with a series of questions which they have generously taken the time to answer.
Bonjour! We are already getting excited about TypeParis 2017. We still have some more interviews to share with you, and this week we chat to Pierre di Sciullo. Pierre is self-taught. He first explored the world of graphic novels, and then created his own experimental publication called Qui? Résiste. For this publication, he designed a number of fonts, including Quantange, Minimum, Gararond, Amanar, Durmou, Sonia, Maximum, Renaissance, etc.
Fleur Pellerin, Minister of Culture and Communication has delivered on 9 April 2015 to Pierre di Sciullo, the knight badge in the order of Arts and Letters, in recognition of his significant contributions to the arts, literature, or the propagation of these fields in favor of French culture.
What is it you like about typography?
Pierre di Sciullo: I don’t like typography in itself. With a car I like to move and travel. Cooking is a pleasure when I can share the food with friends. I like also to share my favorite lectures.

At what point in history would you choose to live?
Around the time Champollion was close to deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphic system.
Has your creative process changed over the years?
I don’t have only one; I adapt my process every time to the situation. I am quicker than 20 years ago because I am able to immediately see the difference between a bad idea, a false-good-idea and an interesting road to follow.
What is your favourite magazine/movie/T.V. series?
None, I rarely watch tv. Two years ago I discovered Breaking Bad and I liked it very much. Also an Australian series, The Slap. 24 years ago I was very fond of The Avengers, The Prisoner. I am not nostalgic at all. A recent favorite movie is Hors Satan, by Bruno Dumont.
What sparked your interest in type design?
I feel more focused on art, love and books.
Your most satisfying achievement?
The international memorial Notre-Dame-de-Lorette.
Name something that inspires you.
Raymond Devos performances; Steve Coleman music; french grammar; etc.
