TPTalks19 #2: Neil Summerour + Borja Martínez

Second TPTalks of 2019! It felt good to meet all up at Le Tank again. Véronique Marrier, project manager for graphic design at the Centre national des arts plastiques (CNAP) and editorial manager of Graphisme en France, was the facilitator of both talks. Once more, the public waited anxiously to listen Neil Summerour and Borja Martínez.

Neil Summerour was already at Le Tank after being the first guest critic of TypeParis 2019. Neil, born in the Açore in 1972, has won the Type Directors Club Certificate of Typographic Excellence six times and was the 2012 recipient of the People’s Choice Award in the Morisawa Type Design competition for his Japanese typeface, Tegaki. Currently he serves as Chair for the Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA).

Neil’s talk was intentionally aimed at TypeParis attendees. He gave them advices while he passionately showed part of the work he has made in his type foundry, Positype. With all kinds of details, expressing his love and dedication to letterforms.

Later on it was Borja Martínez’s turn. Borja came from Barcelona the same Thursday to talk about the work he is doing with his team at Lo siento studio, specially interested in taking over identity projects as a whole. The main feature of its work is its physical and material approach to the graphic solutions, resulting in a field where graphic and industrial go hand by hand, in a constant search for an alliance with the artisanal processes.

He showed and explained us the complete creative process of some of their projects. None of them could have been achieved without the passion they put into their job. With the experimentation as the basis, they usually work like surgeons, as we watched in their exquisite videos.
