Pressure

Pressure is a typeface family developed for text with a regular, medium, bold and black version. Pressure is inspired by calligraphic drawings for its shapes and by roman uppercases inscriptions for the proportions.

I wanted to create a typeface that is both optimized for legibility in regular small size, but also having a strong personality in black bigger size for titles or quotations for example. So starting from my own letterings in ink , I tried to translate the fluidity , flexibility and tension that can be observed in the calligraphic drawing through a both sensitive and solid structured typeface.

Pressure is characterized by different special features: stems are flared (from thick to thin to thick) to translate typographically the pressure of the calligraphy pen on the paper, then the curves are fatter at the upstrokes and fractured in hairlines links to emphasis where the pen changes direction and strengthen the diagonal axis, and finally the bilateral serifs are asymmetrical which give both a stability and a comfort for reading in small size while giving it a more modern side with their shapes.

Thus it’s a typeface both old style and modern. My first intension to translate the pen movement on the paper through a modern tool for designing typefaces provide the name of my typeface: Pressure.

I strongly want to thank Jean François Porchez, Malou Verlomme, Mathieu Réguer, Franck Jalleau and Julien Priez for encouraging me to create this sort of typeface and for giving me the opportunity to meet fantastic people and typographers who all understood my intention at the first look and guided me perfectly to best optimize Pressure. Then I have to sincerely thank all the special guests: Jeremy Tankard for the help to find a unique ending for my “a” lowercase and good forms for all my lowercases “b,d,p,q” bowls, Henrik Kubel for the wise idea to simply add bilateral serifs instead of an unsound semi-serif typeface, Lucas de Groot for the perfect tips for adjusting the terminal of my “t” lowercase and others important details, and Fred Smeijers for the valuable advices on the consistency of the overall style of my typeface.
