Beauregard
Beauregard is a place in Charente, in the west coast of France, this land has belonged to my family for 3 generations. It’s a piece of nature where I spent many summers as a child. My brother started transforming this land 15 years ago, with the sweat of his brow and the strength of his hands. Today, Aux Potagers de Beauregard, he grows several varieties of organic fruit and vegetables. It’s became an island of biodiversity and I love spending my time surrounded by nature and my family more than ever.
To pay tribute to this land and to my brother’s work, I decided to create a typeface family inspired by nature, agriculture and the relationship that my brother maintain with it.
Inspired by the Arts Nouveaux movement and natural forms, Beauregard is made up of 6 weights ranging from light to extra bold, with a high-contrast Slab version. It also contains alternative letters and ligatures directly linked to the farm’s agricultural and commercial activities.
Although it is more for display, it works quite well in a text. Characterised by its undulating side and asymmetrical serifs, it tends to stabilise within a paragraph to provide a comfortable reading experience.
Like my brother choose an hard job, I didn’t take the easy way out for my first typeface, but thanks to TypeParis the Beauregard typeface family exists! Starting with my calligraphy and my first chaotic drawings, I never stop trying to calm down the shapes of my letters to make a system with it.
This wouldn’t have been possible without the excellent teaching of Jean François, Gina, Mathieu, Julie, Malou, Marc, and Rainer… Thank you all for encouraging me, advising me and sometimes calming me down a bit…Thanks to you, I’ve been able to preserve the essence of my drawings and obtain a functional typography that reflects me. I’d also like to say a huge thank you to Cecilia del Castillo, Ramiro Espinoza, Diana Ovezea, Barbara Bigosińska and Albert-Jan Pool for taking the time and finding solutions to improve my project, which was an honour.
