In this lecture, we will talk about Ukrainian Cyrillic through the lens of historical analysis and personal stories, using examples from our own works, projects, and personalities, both historical and among our colleagues.
Victoria and Vitalina Lopukhina work as a duo as calligraphers, illustrators, graphic designers, type designers and teachers. Very quickly on their career, they enjoyed working with typography —especially with artistic calligraphy and lettering. Cyrillic script as rooted in the Ukrainian tradition is something for which they dedicate their time. It is in these ancient roots that they found an inspiration for a path forward for Cyrillic letterforms. As “amateur” Cyrillic paleographers, they have spent countless hours examining examples of historic handwriting in the dusty library archives, working with historical documents — in addition to various digital archives.
They worked with: The Economist (London), Nike, Louis Vuitton, Dior (Kyiv, Vienna), Tiffany & Co., McDonalds, Zirkova (Canada), Glyphs app… Their works has been exhibited in Turkey, Poland, Ukraine. Speakers at Typographics, ATypI, Typomania, Wroclaw type Forum, Typetersburg, TEDxKyiv 2018. You can enjoy their work in books about type and calligraphy, such as: Hand to Type Germany), The Design of Words (Italy), The complete guide to hand lettering (USA), Novum magazine (Germany).
